IUPUI Nonprofit Expo: Bringing students and employers together

Now in its sixth year, the IUPUI Nonprofit Expo brings together nonprofit, government and community partners that offer internship, volunteer and job opportunities for IUPUI students and alumni.

This year’s event will take place March 22 from noon to 4 p.m. at the IUPUI Campus Center.

“The Nonprofit Expo at IUPUI is a great way to connect with emerging nonprofit practitioners,” said Alyssa Starr Newerth, the deputy director of Indy Reads. “The students are always very interested in our work and we have made many connections over the years at the expo. We have hired interns and met future and current community partners at this event.”

The expo is a collaborative effort among six IUPUI’s schools. Annually, it is coordinated by the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI, IU School of Social Work, the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, IUPUI Center for Service and Learning and the IU School of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences. SPEA study finds consistent link between violent crime and concealed-carry gun permits

The first study to find a significant relationship between firearm crime and subsequent applications for, and issuance of, concealed-carry gun permits has been published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence.

The paper, “Firearm Violence and Effects on Concealed Gun Carrying: Large Debate and Small Effects,” found there is a consistent link between violent crime — especially crimes that involve guns — and an increase in the number of people issued carry permits over two time periods examined in the study, said Jeremy Carter, an assistant professor in the SPEA IUPUI.

While the link is consistent and robust, Carter said the magnitude of this association is relatively low.

“It seems the level of debate surrounding violence and concealed carrying far outweighs any observed effects,” Carter and his co-author, Michael Binder, an assistant professor at the University of North Florida, conclude. “We acknowledge that other factors are just as — if not more — important and highlight the need for more refined research to parse out any plausible relationships.” (more…)

IU School of Public and Environmental Affairs rises to No. 1 in U.S. News graduate school rankings

The Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs in Bloomington is No. 1 in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Graduate Schools rankings.

The IU Maurer School of Law also returned to U.S. News’ top 25, joining the Kelley School of Business, the IU School of Nursing and several health disciplines in the College of Arts and Sciences that are similarly ranked. IU graduate programs in education, fine arts and medicine also were ranked by the publication.

“We have a terrific, diverse and comprehensive array of graduate and professional programs,” said IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President Lauren Robel. “These rankings again reflect their excellence and quality.” (more…)

As the Manager of Patient Services at Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, Sara Beal has a lot on her plate. She manages three RN case managers, four social work case managers and a nursing home program that employs contracted and full-time physicians and nurse practitioners. Just two years ago, Sara had never managed anyone in her life. “I went from being a co-worker of everyone in my department to being the manager. I wondered how I could maintain friendships with my employees and yet still be their leader.” (more…)

Executive Education’s intense training develops nonprofit leaders

In the complex world of nonprofit management, today’s leaders must possess a unique set of skills in order to navigate the industry’s challenging landscape. Whether it’s working with board members, leading a group of volunteers, or competing for fundraising dollars, those charged with running the organization need a broad array of skills.

The Executive Education division of the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA) partners with The Fundraising School at the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy to provide leaders with the critical tools needed to run a successful nonprofit. Through the Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership program, the two schools have developed a four-course program that delivers intense training for real-world impact.

“Leadership of nonprofit organizations is pretty unique,” said Sara Johnson, director of Executive Education at SPEA. “One of the things considered when putting this program together was, “What specific skills like developing and assessing a nonprofit board of directors, do these executives need to have in order to lead that type of organization?’” (more…)
